The medium firm (6) feel of the Tuft & Needle Mint Mattress gives it a fairly broad appeal, but it works especially well for side sleepers under 230 pounds. Back and stomach sleepers under 130 pounds can also find a lot to like in the Mint. However, sleepers over 130 pounds may benefit from a firmer sleep surface that’s able to better align the spine and support the body’s heavier areas, like the hips.

In terms of performance, the Mint Mattress is made of polyfoam, not memory foam, so it has less of that signature hug. It’s not bouncy or springy like a latex or hybrid mattress, but it does sleep cooler than other all-foam options and is great at isolating motion. It’s also durable and should hold up well to normal wear and tear.

Sleeping Positions, Body Weight, and Firmness

The ideal firmness level for a mattress varies depending on a sleeper’s body type and preferred sleep position. Our team of testers includes a range of sleepers to better pinpoint a mattress’ balance of comfort and support, as well as its overall feel.

In the case of the Tuft & Needle Mint Mattress, its fairly balanced ratio between the comfort layers and support core give it a medium firm rating or a 6 on our 10-point firmness scale. This mid-level firmness level is neither too soft nor too hard and works for a majority of sleepers.

Side Sleepers

The Mint was an excellent fit for our side sleeping testers weighing between 130 and 230 pounds. They appreciated the just-right levels of conforming comfort and alignment-promoting support. Lighter side sleepers also benefited from the pressure-relieving contour of the Mint’s polyfoam upper layers. While slightly less impressed, side sleepers over 230 pounds rated the Mint as average for an all-foam mattress.

Back Sleepers

For our back sleepers under 130 pounds, the Mint checked all the boxes. They noted the support core’s ample pushback and the significant pressure relief of the comfort layers. However, for our back-sleeping testers over 130 pounds, the Mint delivered only average levels of comfort and support.

Stomach Sleepers

Stomach sleepers under 130 pounds found the most to like about the Mint, finding that the polyfoam core offered sufficient support around the hips, while the comfort layers cradled the body. Ratings decreased for stomach sleepers over 130 pounds with the waning performance more pronounced for those above 230 pounds who experienced too much sinkage under the midsection.

Our testers rated the Tuft & Needle Mint Mattress across key performance categories with one being poor and five being excellent.

Pressure Relief

Rating: 4/5

All-foam mattresses are known for their superior pressure relieving capabilities and the Mint is no exception. Its polyfoam comfort layers are perhaps slightly less conforming than true memory foam might be, but the mattress offers plenty of contouring capability nonetheless. By cradling the natural curves of the spine, the polyfoam promotes alignment and reduces the build up of pressure in key points around the neck, shoulders, and hips.

Temperature Neutrality

Our testers were impressed with the Mint’s temperature neutrality. All-foam mattresses tend to trap body heat, but the Mint incorporates special materials into its foams designed to keep the mattress cool. The uppermost polyfoam layer is infused with graphite and gel meant to draw heat away from the sleep surface. It also features an open-cell structure for better breathability. A second comfort layer incorporates ceramic and gel for further cooling.

Motion Isolation

Rating: 4/5

Tuft & Needle promotes the Mint as a mattress designed for sharing, and our testing team found that it lives up to this claim. Even during our kettlebell test, the layers of polyfoam efficiently isolated motion, meaning movement didn’t travel across the sleep surface. We’re confident that sleepers won’t be easily disturbed by children, partners, or pets on the Mint mattress. 

Edge Support

Rating: 3/5

The edges of all-foam mattresses tend to collapse under pressure. The Mint offsets this somewhat with a reinforced edge. While not as sturdy as the perimeter of an innerspring or hybrid mattress, the Mint’s added edge support does increase the usable area and makes it easier to get in and out of bed.

Durability

Rating: 4/5

In general, all-foam mattresses are less durable than their latex and hybrid counterparts, lasting an average of between six and seven years. Given the Mint’s use of high-quality foam construction, sleepers can expect it to meet and possibly exceed the usual foam mattress lifespan of six to seven years. Of course, much depends on each individual owner’s level of wear and tear so actual lifespans will vary.

Ease of Movement

Rating: 3/5

Given the deep contour of the Mint’s polyfoam comfort layers, the mattress is less reactive to movement across the sleep surface. While not as deeply conforming as some memory foam models, the Mint’s foam construction still feels more like sleeping in the mattress rather than sleeping on it. This can be a boon for those looking for pressure relief, but is less ideal for active sleepers or those seeking the bounciness of an innerspring or latex mattress.

Sex

Rating: 3/5

The Mint’s foam layers create a cushioned surface for sex that works well for some couples. However, with less springiness than other mattress types and average edge support, the Mint may not be ideal for couples who desire a more responsive surface that facilitates easy movement.

Off-Gassing

Rating: 3/5

Typically, all-foam mattresses release the most volatile organic compounds (VOCs), the tiny particles that are responsible for the temporary odors that develop after a mattress is taken out of its packaging. The Mint offsets this somewhat by using CertiPUR-US certified foams that are free of harmful chemicals. The Mint is also Greenguard Gold certified for low emissions.

The Tuft & Needle Mint Mattress features a knit cover that zips off for easy washing. Two layers of adaptive polyfoam make up the comfort system. The first is 3 inches of open-cell polyfoam designed to wick away heat with its infusion of graphite and gel. Just below that is a second 2-inch polyfoam layer that incorporates gel and ceramic intended to provide additional cooling and pressure relief.

A 6.5-inch layer of polyfoam in the support core provides a sturdy foundation. The Mint’s edges are reinforced, allowing them to withstand the pressure of getting in and out of bed. All foams used in the Mint Mattress are CertiPUR-US certified free of harmful chemicals and Greenguard Gold certified low in emissions.

Its higher cost compared to other all-foam mattresses accounts for its high-quality foams that incorporate special gel and heat-conducting materials as well as its American design and manufacturing facilities.

Which Tuft & Needle Mattress Is Right for You?

The Mint is one of two all-foam mattress models made by Tuft & Needle. The other is the brand’s flagship Original Mattress that has one less layer of polyfoam in the comfort layer, but otherwise features similar materials and construction. Its lower price-point puts Tuft & Needle quality within reach of more shoppers. The Original performed especially well for our stomach and back sleepers.
