Solaire Mattress: Our Verdict

Adjustable airbed mattresses like the Saatva Solaire allow partners and co-sleepers who have differing mattress preferences to choose their ideal firmness level.

The Solaire includes dual air chambers that allow sleepers to adjust the firmness on each side of the bed, with options ranging from soft (3) to firm (8). This lets you and your partner both sleep comfortably at your desired firmness level.

The bed also incorporates cooling elements, including gel-infused memory foam and a breathable cotton cover, that help with temperature regulation. Talalay latex in the comfort layer gives the bed a responsive yet conforming feel, and the vulcanized air chambers provide sleepers with even support.

Because of its adjustable firmness, the Solaire is a good fit for most sleepers regardless of their body size or preferred sleep position. Side, back, and stomach sleepers across all weight categories rated the mattress highly during testing, making it a good fit for combination sleepers as well. Overall, we found the Solaire to be a great option for couples who prefer a customized and luxe feel.

Saatva Solaire Mattress: An Introduction

Saatva was founded in 2010 and is well known for using high-quality, organic materials in their mattresses and sleep accessories. The company offers a wide range of luxury products designed to accommodate a variety of sleepers.

The Saatva Solaire Mattress is the brand’s adjustable airbed. Vulcanized rubber air chambers can be inflated or deflated, allowing each side of the mattress to be adjusted to 50 firmness levels that range from soft (3) to firm (8) on our 10-point firmness scale.

The bed also contains a breathable organic cotton cover and pillow-top above Talalay latex and gel-infused memory foam. The support core includes air chambers and an edge enclosure for added stability.

We’ll discuss how this bed fared during testing in performance categories like temperature control, edge support, and pressure relief. We’ll also cover the mattress’ unique features and which types of sleepers might find the Solaire a good fit.

How We Review

During testing, our team uses a product testing methodology to evaluate each product in several performance categories. This helps us determine how sleepers with varying needs will respond to each mattress so we can predict the best mattress for a wide range of sleeper types.

What’s It Like to Sleep on the Solaire Mattress?

The Solaire Mattress offers sleepers the ability to customize the feel on their side of the bed, thanks to its adjustable firmness option. With 50 firmness settings ranging from soft (3) to firm (8), you can choose a sleep surface that caters to your body size and sleep position.

The Solaire provides a responsive yet supportive surface that helps keep sleepers cool. The comfort layers of Talalay latex and gel-infused memory foam offer light bounce and contouring. The breathable cotton cover and inflation technology in the support core help draw away heat, making it a good option for hot sleepers.

Solaire Mattress Pros and Cons

Pros

  • 50 firmness settings accommodate a wide variety of sleep styles and body types
  • Aerated Talalay latex in the comfort layer provides bounce and increased airflow
  • Gel-infused memory foam and organic cotton cover offer a cool sleep

Cons

  • High-end price tag may not suit those on a tight budget
  • Inflation technology may not appeal to those who prefer traditional mattresses
  • Firmness adjustment sounds can disturb light sleepers

Sleeping Positions, Body Weight, and Firmness

You can adjust the Saatva Solaire Mattress to your ideal firmness, with options ranging from soft (3) to firm (8). We found that this customizable feature made the Solaire a good option for a wide range of sleepers.

Sleep position and body size impact how a mattress feels. Our testing team considers this in addition to other factors when rating different types of mattresses. Thanks to the adjustable firmness option, the Solaire performed well for most of our testers, regardless of sleep position and body weight. Sleepers over 130 pounds in particular gave the mattress high marks.

Solaire Mattress Sleeper Ratings

Under 130 lbs.130-230 lbs.Over 230 lbs.
Side Sleepers4/55/55/5
Back Sleepers3/55/55/5
Stomach Sleepers3/55/55/5

Side sleepers: The Solaire performed best for side sleepers over 130 pounds. Side sleepers need cushioning at the hips and shoulders to prevent pressure points from forming and to provide enough support to promote proper spinal alignment. We found that the Solaire’s latex and foam comfort layers, as well as its adjustable firmness, made it a great option for side sleepers in all weight categories.

Back sleepers: Because sleepers have the option to adjust the firmness level up to firm (8), our testing team found the Solaire performed well for most back sleepers. Back sleepers require a firmer surface that supports the lumbar region, and the Solaire includes a pillow-top and zoned latex comfort layer that specifically target this region. Back sleepers over 130 pounds found the Solaire particularly supportive.

Stomach sleepers: In general, stomach sleepers need a firmer mattress that keeps their spine in alignment. A higher firmness level helps prevent the hips from sinking too deeply into the mattress. During testing, the Solaire performed exceptionally well for stomach sleepers over 130 pounds, though it still offered good support for those under 130 pounds.

Couples and Combination Sleepers

The ability to adjust the firmness on both sides of the mattress makes the Solaire a good fit for co-sleepers and combination sleepers. Couples and co-sleepers often prefer different firmnesses, which may require compromise. Additionally, combination sleepers might pick a mattress well suited for one sleep position but not others. The Solaire allows couples and combination sleepers to each customize the feel of the mattress to fit their needs.

Our Performance Ratings

Our team tested the Solaire and rated it in several performance categories. We use a 5-point scale, with 1 signifying a poor rating and 5 being excellent.

Pressure Relief

Rating: 4/5

The Solaire allows you to choose the firmness that best suits your sleep position and body size. Ranging from a soft (3) to a firm (8), the mattress’ surface can be adjusted for those who need more or less contouring. Sleepers under 130 pounds may prefer a softer mattress, while back and stomach sleepers might prefer a firmer option to keep them from sinking too far into their mattress. The Talalay latex and memory foam comfort layers also help cushion the body and align the spine.

Temperature Neutrality

Rating: 5/5

Our testers found that the multiple cooling properties in the Solaire provides good temperature regulation throughout the night. The gel-infused memory foam and latex in the comfort layers helps redistribute heat throughout the mattress. The breathable cotton cover draws heat away from your body, which means the Solaire sleeps much cooler than other airbeds.

Motion Isolation

Rating: 3/5

The Solaire includes a pillow-top that absorbs movement and reduces motion transfer. This means you are less likely to feel your partner’s movements throughout the night. The memory foam in the bed’s comfort layer also absorbs vibrations, though sleepers may feel some bounce because of the responsive latex layer. Our team reported minimal disturbance during partnered tests, so the bed is likely to perform well for most co-sleepers.

Edge Support

Rating: 3/5

The Solaire’s vulcanized air chambers and reinforced edge enclosure enhance the bed’s edge support. The air chambers in the support core are designed to resist sinkage, giving it a sturdy base. The edge enclosure wraps around the perimeter of the mattress, covering the inflator hoses that allow sleepers to adjust the firmness level. This extra reinforcement makes it easier for sleepers to sit on the edge and use the bed’s entire surface.

Durability

Rating: 4/5

Airbed mattresses have an average lifespan of 8 to 10 years. Durability depends on many factors, like proper use and the quality of construction materials. With its latex and memory foam layers, the Solaire should last as long as a typical airbed.

Ease of Movement

Rating: 4/5

Sleepers can move across the Solaire easily, thanks to its custom firmness options. However, softer settings allow for more sinkage and contouring, which can make it more challenging to change positions. Firmer settings allow you to sleep on top of the mattress and move around a little more easily. Regardless of settings, the latex comfort layer allows you to switch positions with relative ease, as it provides a bit of bounce.

Sex

Rating: 4/5

The Solaire performs well in this category because sleepers can adjust the firmness of the bed to their ideal setting for sex. For example, a softer setting is less responsive but may provide more traction, while a firmer setting offers more bounce and less traction. Sleepers also have the option to adjust the settings to support differerent preferences for sleep as opposed to sex.

Off-Gassing

Rating: 4/5

Most mattresses that contain foam need time to off-gas after being set up. Off-gassing is caused by volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which may have a chemical smell. Though they are not considered harmful, you may need to place your mattress in a well-ventilated area until the VOCs dissipate. The Solaire produces minimal off-gassing, thanks to the breathable materials and minimal synthetic foams in its construction. This makes it a good option for those who are sensitive to certain odors.

What Is the Solaire Mattress Made Of?

The Saatva Solaire Mattress features an organic cotton cover certified by the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS). The material is breathable and wraps around a 3-inch zoned pillow-top designed for added lumbar support.

The mattress’ comfort layers are made with aerated Rainforest Alliance-certified Talalay latex. The latex, which is natural and hypoallergenic, provides a responsive yet contouring feel. A layer of gel-infused memory foam certified by CertiPUR-US is designed to promote a cool surface and cushion pressure points. A moisture barrier made of polyfoam and PVC protects the mattress’ air chambers from bacteria growth.

The support core consists of vulcanized rubber air chambers that allow sleepers to customize the bed’s firmness level. The air chambers are encased in a foam edge enclosure that protects the bed’s inflator and hoses while providing enhanced edge support.

How Does the Adjustable Firmness Work?

Using the bed’s remote, you can adjust the firmness level between soft (3) and firm (8). Increasing or decreasing the firmness activates the mattress’ internal air inflator mechanism. Filling the air chamber with air creates a firmer surface, while releasing air creates a softer surface. The mattress provides up to 50 firmness settings, but this number varies by bed size, with queen and larger beds providing a larger range of settings.

Solaire Upper-Flex Mattresses

The Solaire Upper-Flex Mattress comes in both king and queen sizes. This model has a split top, allowing each sleeper to adjust the angle of the bed’s head. The Upper-Flex Mattress should be paired with an adjustable base. Saatva also offers custom fitted sheets for this model.

How Much Does the Saatva Solaire Mattress Cost?

The Saatva Solaire has a high-end price-point compared to the average cost of an airbed, which is typically between $2,000 and $2,400 for a queen size. The Solaire’s high-quality materials and advanced design may make it worth the cost for sleepers wanting customizable firmness options and a cooler sleep.

Which Airbed Is Right for You?

While all airbeds offer adjustable firmness options, the construction materials, height, and price vary. For example, the Natural Form Refresh airbed is similar to the Solaire but features a smaller profile and a reduced firmness range. However, it may perform better than the Solaire for back and stomach sleepers under 130 pounds. Similarly, both the Sleep Number i8 and ReST 5-Zone Bed outperform the Solaire with side sleepers under 130 pounds.

When selecting an airbed, it’s important to consider how different sleeper types rated each bed to give you a better idea of how comfortable you might find specific models. Keep in mind your sleep needs and preferences when selecting the best bed for you.

Saatva Solaire Mattress FAQ

Who is the Saatva Solaire Mattress ideal for?

Because you can adjust its firmness level, the Saatva Solaire Mattress is a great option for most sleepers. It is a particularly good option for couples, as each individual can adjust the firmness to their liking. The mattress is also well suited to combination sleepers.

Is the Solaire Mattress good for people who snore?

The Solaire Mattress is a good option for people who snore because of its adjustable firmness. Generally, people snore when sleeping on their back and need to turn on their side to stop. The Solaire allows you to adjust the firmness setting to one that’s comfortable for side sleeping. The Upper-Flex models can also help with this issue because they allow you to elevate your head, which can reduce snoring.

Is the Saatva Solaire an air mattress?

No, the Saatva Solaire is not an air mattress. It is an adjustable airbed. Air mattresses are typically inexpensive, inflatable beds used when camping or accommodating houseguests. An airbed is an adjustable mattress that uses airflow technology to adjust the bed’s firmness and includes latex or foam comfort layers.

What are the cons of an airbed?

The biggest downside of airbeds is the cost. Because of their high-tech construction, they tend to carry above-average price-points that may not work for budget-conscious shoppers. Additionally, the air inflation mechanism makes noise when the firmness is adjusted, which can disrupt sleep.

Do you need deep-pocket sheets for the Saatva Solaire?

You do not need deep-pocket sheets for the Solaire, as it has a 13-inch profile. You will, however, need a fitted sheet created specifically for Upper-Flex models. Saatva also recommends purchasing a split king sheet if you order a split king or California king Solaire mattress.
