Side Sleepers
Side sleepers tend to feel pressure in their hips and shoulders, which can make overly firm mattresses uncomfortable. Our side sleepers who weigh under 230 pounds found the Saatva HD too firm and reported that it lacks the cushioning they prefer. Back Sleepers
Back sleepers generally need a sleep surface that supports the spine with just enough contouring for the lower back. Our back sleepers over 130 pounds were impressed with the HD’s combination of sturdy support and gentle contouring. Back sleepers under 130 pounds were less enthusiastic, noting that it lacks sufficient cushioning for their needs.
Stomach Sleepers
Stomach sleepers typically require a firmer mattress to stay comfortable and avoid sinkage in their midsection. All of our stomach sleepers gave the HD at least average marks, with those between 130 and 230 pounds particularly praising its combination of support and light contouring.

The latex in the Saatva HD’s comfort system features five ergonomic zones targeting areas that commonly experience pressure points, including the hips, shoulders, and lumbar region. The support core uses an offset coil system, which offers more contouring and motion isolation than traditional innerspring coils. Due to its firm construction, however, the HD may not provide enough contouring or pressure relief for sleepers under 130 pounds.

Mattresses that contain an innerspring support core tend to respond to movement, which means that they generally don’t isolate motion as well as other mattress types. Although the layers of latex and foam did absorb some movement in our tests, the surface still moved significantly when a sleeper shifted position or got out of bed. With 6 inches of high-density polyfoam rails surrounding the perimeter, the Saatva HD boasts stronger edge support and a larger usable sleep surface than many luxury mattresses. During testing, the edges sank only slightly under pressure and never felt unstable. Enhanced perimeter support can come in especially handy for people who like to sit or sleep near the edge of the bed.

The Saatva HD features high-quality construction and materials that are made to last. The mattress boasts a high-density polyfoam base layer along with 12.5-gauge recycled steel coils for solid support. The comfort system includes natural latex, which tends to outlast other types of foam. As a whole, we expect this model should last at least seven to eight years before needing to be replaced.
Ease of Movement

A layer of latex combined with a responsive coil system gives the Saatva HD plenty of bounce and prevents it from sinking excessively during movement. Although memory foam can sometimes leave a mattress less responsive and make it more difficult to change sleeping positions, our testing team didn’t find these drawbacks with the Saatva HD. During testing, our team was able to shift from one position to another and crawl across the mattress with ease.

Great temperature control, strong edge support, and a relatively responsive feel make the HD a great option for people who regularly use their mattress for sex. One potential downside is that the offset coils in the support core are prone to making noise, which could be distracting for some couples.
Off-Gassing

Off-gassing refers to the chemical smell that some new mattresses release, especially during unboxing. This odor comes from VOCs, or volatile organic compounds, that are associated with the production of some foams and adhesives. While VOCs are considered harmless and dissipate over time, many people find their smell unpleasant. Since the HD contains natural latex and coils and isn’t compressed for delivery, it had less of an odor than many other all-foam mattresses we’ve tested.
What Is the Saatva HD Mattress Made Of?
The Saatva HD’s cover is made from organic cotton. Hand-tufting helps prevent the fabric from developing impressions or indentations. The cover is treated with Guardin, a botanical antimicrobial formula intended to prevent bacteria and mold growth.
The top layer of the comfort system is a 3-inch Euro-top quilted with a mixture of polyfoam and plush fibers. Next is a layer of natural latex that’s zoned to offer lumbar support and pressure relief. A layer of memory foam is followed by denser polyfoam to increase the mattress’ support and durability.
The Saatva HD’s support core features an offset innerspring system consisting of thick 12.5-gauge tempered coils designed to support heavier people. Saatva’s Lumbar Zone Active Spinal Wire is added to the portion of the mattress under the lower back. This feature is designed to provide enhanced support for the lumbar region. The final layer is an additional piece of dense polyfoam that’s used to reinforce the innerspring support core.

Should You Get the Saatva HD Foundation?
The Saatva HD foundation was developed specifically for use with the Saatva HD Mattress. The company strongly recommends purchasing the HD foundation along with the mattress. That said, the HD should work with many solid bed frames that include a leg in the center of the bed that makes contact with the floor.
The HD foundation is available in two height options: 4.75 inches and 8.75 inches. Both heights cost the same for their respective mattress sizes.
Saatva also sells a metal frame that fits under the HD foundation and adds 7.5 inches to the bed’s overall profile. The frame isn’t designed for stand-alone use.
