Sleep Doctor’s Take: Nectar Classic Hybrid Mattress

The Nectar Hybrid is a well-designed, competitively priced mattress that offers a balance of cushion and support, particularly for back and stomach sleepers. With excellent temperature regulation and edge support, it’s a good option for those who sleep hot or need support getting in and out of bed. However, those who prefer plush mattresses may find it too firm.

Nectar Classic Hybrid Mattress: An Introduction

Founded in 2017, Nectar has quickly become known for some of the most popular mattresses in the U.S. thanks to its quality materials and construction as well as its competitive prices.

The Nectar Classic Hybrid Mattress is a hybrid version of the company’s flagship foam modeI, the Nectar Classic. With gel-infused memory foam, polyfoam, and pocketed coils, it balances the contouring of memory foam with the responsive support of an innerspring mattress. The mattress also features a quilted polyester cover designed to wick away heat and moisture.

To help you decide if the Nectar Hybrid is right for you, we’ll discuss how the mattress performed in our sleep lab for our testers with different body types and sleeping positions. We’ll also detail its materials and construction, where to purchase it, and what types of discounts, warranties, and sleep trials to expect.

How We Review

We rigorously test each mattress in our dedicated sleep lab and assess performance in a variety of categories. By engaging testers of different sleep positions and body types, our reviews aim to help each individual find the best mattress for their needs.

What’s It Like to Sleep on the Nectar Hybrid Mattress?

The Nectar Classic Hybrid cradles your body with memory foam, but without the sinking or movement restriction that often accompanies the material. It’s cool to the touch and contours without totally enveloping the body thanks to the mattress’ firm (7) feel.

Despite good ease of movement facilitated by the pocketed coils, our testing team found the mattress still isolated motion well, meaning that both pets and active partners can share the bed without causing a disturbance.

Our stomach and back sleepers especially enjoyed the mattress’ balance of conforming and support. It’s also great for couples because of the reinforced edge support, which allows sleepers to use the entire area of the mattress without sinking along the perimeter.

While the Nectar Classic Hybrid accommodates a wide range of sleepers, there are still many personal factors to evaluate when choosing a mattress

Pros

  • Sleeps cool
  • Limits motion transfer while still allowing ease of movement
  • Ideal for back sleepers between 130 and 230 pounds

Cons

  • Limited pressure relief compared to hybrids with thicker comfort layers
  • Firmer and less contouring than foam mattresses
  • Less responsive than innerspring mattresses

Sleeping Positions, Body Weight, and Firmness

The Nectar Hybrid rated as firm (7) on our 10-point firmness scale. Each sleeper’s ideal mattress firmness varies based on body type, sleeping position, and personal preferences.

In general, side sleepers over 230 pounds and back and stomach sleepers of various body types prefer firmer mattresses like the Nectar Hybrid because they provide ample pressure relief and prevent excessive sinking. Sleepers who want a more even balance between plushness and support may want to opt for a medium firm mattress.

In order to help you make an informed choice, we’ve gathered feedback from testers that span a full range of sleeping positions and body weights.

Back Sleepers4/55/53/5

Side Sleepers

The Nectar Hybrid offers a sufficient balance of cushion and support for side sleepers weighing over 130 pounds. However, it did not provide enough cushioning for the shoulders and hips in our testers under 130 pounds. These sleeper types may want to consider one of Nectar’s more contouring foam models. Back Sleepers

Our back sleepers found that the Nectar Classic Hybrid provided a comfortable sleeping experience regardless of body type. Its pocketed coil core provided support to the midsection, while the memory foam comfort layers helped cushion the lumbar region. However, back sleepers weighing more than 230 pounds may prefer a firmer mattress to avoid sinkage.

Stomach Sleepers

Thanks to its firm surface, the Nectar Hybrid supports the midsection and keeps the spine aligned, especially for stomach sleepers weighing less than 130 pounds. While our stomach sleepers over 230 pounds still rated the mattress well, they noted that a firmer mattress may do a better job at keeping them on top of the mattress.

Our Performance Ratings

Our testers evaluated the Nectar Hybrid’s performance in several major categories and delivered ratings on a scale from 1 to 5, with 1 being poor and 5 being excellent.

The Nectar Hybrid’s firmer surface and cooling properties make it a good choice for most back sleepers.

Pressure Relief

Rating: 3/5

The Nectar Hybrid’s foam comfort system provides solid pressure relief for most body types and sleep positions. The mattress’ top layer of gel memory foam contours to the sleeper’s body and eases impact on the hips, shoulder, and spine. That said, hybrid models with thicker layers of foam offer even more pressure relief, especially for side sleepers under 130 pounds.

Temperature Neutrality

Rating: 4/5

Thanks to its pocketed coils and gel-infused foam, testing indicated that the Nectar Hybrid regulates body temperature better than many other foam and hybrid mattresses.

The mattress’ top layer of memory foam contains a cooling gel designed to counter the material’s tendency to trap heat. Individually wrapped coils allow for more air circulation than foam mattresses. Finally, a breathable, quilted cover constructed to wick heat and moisture helps make the Nectar Hybrid a good option for hot sleepers.

Motion Isolation

Rating: 4/5

While mattresses with coil support cores often allow more motion transfer, our testers found that the Nectar Hybrid isolates movement better than many similar models. Each of the mattress’ individually wrapped coils moves independently, which reduces motion transfer. The foam layers also help trap movement to minimize disturbances. This above-average motion isolation makes the mattress ideal for sleepers who toss and turn or sleep with partners or pets.

Edge Support

Rating: 4/5

Thick, pocketed coils reinforce the edge of the Nectar Classic Hybrid and prevent excessive sinkage around the perimeter. This robust edge support is especially useful for those who sleep near the sides or who have difficulty getting in and out of bed. Since foam mattresses are often prone to sinking at the sides, this mattress is a good pick for sleepers who want a conforming surface without sacrificing edge support.

Durability

Rating: 3/5

Since the Nectar Hybrid is firmer than average, it’s more resistant to indentations than mattresses made with softer foam. The hybrid construction also means it should last longer than a foam mattress. While durability varies based on usage and proper care, we expect that the Nectar Hybrid will last about seven to eight years, which is average for a hybrid.

Ease of Movement

Rating: 4/5

With polyfoam in the transition and base layers and a pocketed coil core, the Nectar Hybrid offers a relatively responsive surface. Our testers found they could adjust positions and get in and out of bed with relative ease. Combination sleepers and couples should especially appreciate the bed’s ease of movement.

Sex

Rating: 4/5

The Nectar Hybrid scored well in categories generally conducive to sex. Couples can change positions easily and use the entire surface area of the Nectar Hybrid thanks to its excellent ease of movement and strong edge support. While the mattress is firmer than some hybrids, the pocketed coils still provide some bounce. Additionally, the foam helps absorb sound and reduce disruptive noises.

Off-Gassing

Rating: 3/5

Mattresses constructed with foam may produce a temporary odor upon initial unboxing. Known as off-gassing, the odor is caused by volatile organic compounds (VOCs) released during manufacturing. Although harmless, some may find the smell unpleasant. The Nectar Hybrid uses CertiPUR-US certified foams which minimize VOC emissions. It emits only a mild odor which dissipates quickly, usually within 24 to 72 hours.

What Is the Nectar Hybrid Mattress Made Of?

The Nectar Hybrid features a quilted cover with polyethylene fibers designed to wick moisture and heat and remain cool to the touch. It also includes Microban technology, which aims to prevent the growth of bacteria. Sewn-in handles on the sides help with mattress transport.

Two inches of gel-infused memory foam is meant to contour to the body and relieve pressure. The foam is infused with a cooling gel engineered to dissipate body heat. A 1-inch layer of polyfoam provides extra support and helps promote motion isolation.

The support core consists of an 8-inch layer of pocketed coils that provide support and responsiveness. Since each coil is individually wrapped, they move independently and respond better to pressure and movement. The sides are reinforced with extra-thick coils to provide stronger edge support.

A 1-inch polyfoam base reinforces the upper layers. All foam in the Nectar Hybrid is CertiPUR-US certified, indicating that it is free of harmful chemicals.

Which Nectar Mattress Is Right for You?

Nectar offers three mattress designs, each of which is available as a foam or hybrid model. The company’s flagship mattress, the 12-inch Nectar, features gel-infused memory foam and an 8-inch foam support core that maximizes motion isolation.

The 13-inch Nectar Premier model features extra cooling technology and an additional inch of foam for support and cushioning that side sleepers and heavier sleepers may find especially comfortable. The 14-inch Nectar Premier Copper is topped with 4 inches of gel-infused memory foam and a cover with copper fibers designed for even cooler sleeping, making it a good choice for hot sleepers.

Those looking for more responsiveness and edge support should consider one of Nectar’s hybrid options. Compared to the Nectar Hybrid, the Premier Hybrid and Premier Copper Hybrid tested better with side sleepers under 130 pounds.
