Leesa Mattress: Our Verdict

Choosing a new mattress can be complicated, but with the Leesa Original Mattress, you get an all-foam bed with a straightforward design and a reasonable price tag.

This bed contains three layers: contouring memory foam sandwiched between two layers of high-quality polyfoam. This design relieves pressure points while also isolating motion for comfortable sleep with a partner.

The Leesa Original Mattress has a simple yet comfortable design with broad appeal, especially for side sleepers under 230 pounds.

Leesa Mattress: An Introduction

Leesa was founded in 2015 as one of the first mattress-in-a-box companies. The company is known for its commitment to social responsibility through its mattress donation program. Currently, for every 10 mattresses sold, Leesa donates one mattress to someone in need.

The flagship Leesa Original Mattress, a 10-inch all-foam bed, was the first mattress developed by the company. They’ve since branched out to offer four more models, including the budget-friendly Studio Mattress and three hybrid models: the Original Hybrid, the Sapira Hybrid, and the Legend Hybrid.

We’ll provide all the details about the Leesa Original Mattress, including its construction, materials, and pricing. You’ll also learn how the mattress fared when rated in our performance categories, like pressure relief, temperature control, and ease of movement.

How We Review

Our testing team uses our rigorous methodology to test and assess each mattress we review. These ratings help us evaluate each product in depth, which can help you make an informed purchasing decision.

What’s It Like to Sleep on the Leesa Mattress?

Eight inches of high-quality polyfoam and 2 inches of plush memory foam give the Leesa Original Mattress a contouring yet supportive feel. The breathable cover and specialty polyfoam in the comfort layer are designed to help the mattress disperse heat.

We found the Leesa Mattress provides good pressure relief and absorbs movement for an undisturbed sleep. This makes it a good fit for those who share a bed and side sleepers under 230 pounds. But sleepers over 230 pounds may need a bed firmer than the Leesa Original’s medium (5) feel for proper support.

Leesa Mattress Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Enhanced pressure relief and motion isolation
  • High-quality foam, certified free of harmful ingredients
  • Generous 100-night sleep trial

Cons

  • Not ideal for sleepers over 230 pounds
  • All-foam construction offers minimal edge support
  • Not firm enough for most stomach sleepers

Sleeping Positions, Body Weight, and Firmness

The Leesa Original rates as a medium (5) on our 10-point firmness scale. Mattresses at this firmness level offer some sink with significant body contouring.

The firmness of a mattress is one factor that determines how comfortable it feels to you. Your body weight and sleep position can help determine the firmness that’s best for you. That’s why our team includes mattress testers of different sizes and preferred sleep positions.

The Leesa Original Mattress performed best for side sleepers under 230 pounds. Back sleepers under 130 pounds may also find adequate comfort and support from the Leesa Original. However, most stomach sleepers and sleepers over 230 pounds would be better supported by a firmer mattress.

Side Sleepers

Our side sleeping testers under 230 pounds found the Leesa Original to be quite comfortable. The medium (5) feel and foam construction helps support side sleepers’ shoulders and hips without creating pressure points. Generally, our side sleepers over 230 pounds were a bit more mixed, with some of them experiencing too much sink for proper spinal alignment. Read more: Best Mattresses for Heavy Side Sleepers.

Back Sleepers

In general, back sleepers need a firmer mattress to support their lower back and hips. The Leesa Mattress performed well for our back sleepers under 130 pounds, but those over 130 pounds may be better suited to the Leesa Original Hybrid because its hybrid design provides more support.

Stomach Sleepers

The Leesa Mattress may not be a the best option for most stomach sleepers. Some of our testers under 130 pounds received adequate support, but most stomach sleepers need a firmer mattress to keep their midsection from sinking too deeply.

Our Performance Ratings

Our testing team rates each mattress we test in several performance categories. On our 5-point scale, a score of 5 means excellent, and a score of 1 means poor.

Pressure Relief

Rating: 4/5

Because of the memory foam in its comfort system and its all-foam construction, the Leesa Mattress offers substantial pressure relief. This makes it a good mattress for side sleepers who need cushioned support at the shoulders and hips. The right amount of contouring helps to align the spine while relieving pressure so you’re less likely to wake up with sore muscles and joints.

Temperature Neutrality

Rating: 3/5

Foam tends to trap heat by not allowing air to circulate throughout the mattress and cool you off. For this reason, people who sleep hot may find that the Leesa Original does not keep them cool enough at night. That said, the memory foam in the Leesa Original is topped with a layer of polyfoam, which our testers found doesn’t collect heat quite as much.

Motion Isolation

Rating: 4/5

Because memory foam absorbs vibrations, you’re less likely to be disturbed by your partner’s movements when sleeping on the Leesa Original. You may be able to sense strong movements, like getting into and out of bed, but smaller movements like shifting positions will be close to undetectable.

Edge Support

Rating: 2/5

Constructed with three layers of foam, the Leesa Original Mattress shows considerable compression at the edges. This means that laying or sitting on the perimeter of the mattress will cause it to sink, which could compromise your ability to sleep comfortably on the bed’s full surface. During our tests, this also made it a bit more unsteady when sitting on the edge.

Durability

Rating: 3/5

It’s estimated that the average all-foam mattress will last six to seven years with proper care and cleaning. We expect the Leesa Mattress to come close to that estimate. In general, foam mattresses don’t last as long as latex or hybrid ones. The Leesa Original’s medium (5) firmness makes this mattress more likely to sag than a firmer model, but its high-quality materials should help prolong its lifespan.

Ease of Movement

Rating: 3/5

The Leesa Original has a blend of responsive polyfoam and contouring memory foam. The top layer of polyfoam gives the bed a resilient feel, while the memory foam hugs the body. This balance led our testers to give the bed an average rating for ease of movement, meaning that the bed’s construction may slightly hinder your movements without making you feel completely stuck.

Sex

Rating: 3/5

The Leesa Original’s poor edge support could confine sleepers to the center of the bed, and its lack of responsiveness may not be conducive for sex. This combined with the bed’s propensity to trap heat may make the mattress less than ideal for those who tend to overheat.

Off-Gassing

Rating: 3/5

Expect a moderate amount of off-gassing from the Leesa Original Mattress. This means that once the mattress is unboxed, you may notice a chemical smell. This is the foam releasing volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which are generally harmless but have an odor. Place the mattress in a well-ventilated area, and the smell will dissipate in a few days.

What Is the Leesa Mattress Made Of?

The Leesa Original contains three layers of foam and a gray cover made from polyester and spandex. The cover is a breathable knit that’s intended to keep the bed’s surface cool.

The comfort layer consists of 4 inches of foam. A 2-inch layer of specialty, breathable polyfoam is followed by a 2-inch layer of body-contouring memory foam.

Six inches of durable, high-density polyfoam make up the support core. The foams used in the mattress are certified by GREENGUARD Gold and CertiPUR-US, which means they don’t contain chemicals known to be harmful and have to meet standards for low emissions.

How Much Does the Lessa Mattress Cost?

An all-foam mattress can cost anywhere from $250 to over $1,200. The average cost of a queen size foam bed is $1,050. This puts the Leesa Original a bit above the average cost but it’s still a reasonably priced option for those shopping on a budget. When purchasing the mattress, you can bundle it with a foundation, platform, adjustable base, or bed frame for an additional fee.

Which Leesa Mattress Is Right for You?

In addition to the Leesa Original Mattress, Leesa offers four other mattress options that appeal to various sleep needs. The Leesa Studio Mattress is the company’s other foam offering and its most budget-friendly product.

The other three mattresses are hybrids, which combine foam and pocketed coils in their construction. The Leesa Original Hybrid is a good option for back and side sleepers over 130 pounds. The Leesa Sapira Hybrid performs well for almost all sleep styles except for back and stomach sleepers over 230 pounds. Leesa’s luxury option is the Leesa Legend, which performs best for side sleepers.

Leesa Mattress FAQ

How long does a Leesa Mattress last?

Because it’s an all-foam bed, the Leesa Mattress likely won’t last as long as a latex or innerspring mattress. However, if taken care of properly, the Leesa Mattress should last up to seven years, on average.

Will sleepers over 230 pounds like the Leesa Mattress?

Sleepers over 230 pounds usually need a firmer bed than the Leesa Mattress. However, it may perform adequately for side sleepers in this weight group.

Can you sleep on a Leesa Mattress right away?

Once it’s unboxed, the Leesa Mattress takes about an hour to decompress. After a few days, it will fully off-gas and expand, making it ready for sleep.

Can you flip the Leesa Mattress?

You don’t need to flip the Leesa Mattress. Most foam mattresses have layers in a specific order for optimal support and contouring and do not need to be flipped like a traditional spring mattress.

Where can you try the Leesa Mattress?

The Leesa Mattress is sold in several retail stores, including Macy’s, West Elm, and Pottery Barn. You can also visit the Leesa showroom in New York City. If there isn’t a brick-and-mortar location near you, you can utilize Leesa’s 100-night sleep trial to try out the mattress at home.
