The Helix’s hybrid design blends support and comfort with contouring memory foam layers and responsive pocketed coils. The memory foam helps relieve pressure points, while the pocketed coils promote spine alignment. The combination makes Helix mattresses suitable to a wide range of sleepers who can choose the model best suited to their needs and preferences. 

Helix also designs its models for particular sleep styles. For example, the Sunset, Midnight, and Twilight models are designed for side sleepers, while the Moonlight, Dusk, and Dawn are made for back and stomach sleepers. 

We found it fairly easy to switch sleeping positions on the Helix Midnight Luxe.

Sleeping Positions, Body Weight, and Firmness

The Helix Mattress ranges in firmness levels from soft (3) to firm (8) on our 10-point firmness scale. The wide range of firmness options means most sleeper types should find a model that suits their needs. 

When choosing a mattress, it’s important to consider your sleep style and body weight. These factors can impact how a mattress feels to each individual, and our testing team considers these criteria when rating each mattress. For example, lighter side sleepers typically prefer medium soft to medium firmness levels that provide support and moderate contouring, while heavier side sleepers generally find firmer mattresses offer a better blend of support and comfort.

Side Sleepers

Side sleepers need a mattress that contours to the body to relieve pressure points and offers enough support to encourage proper spinal alignment. 

Side sleepers under 130 pounds are most likely to find support in Helix’s soft to medium firm options. Our lighter testers found the Moonlight offered the most comfort and support. Sleepers weighing between 130 and 230 pounds require a medium or medium firm mattress for ideal support. Testing revealed that the Dusk and Midnight models best suited these sleeper types. 

The Plus model’s firm feel and foam layers make it a good option for side sleepers over 230 pounds. The Twilight also offers a firm feel and a supportive surface for heavier sleepers.

Back Sleepers

Back sleepers generally need increased lumbar support and a firmer surface. For back sleepers under 130 pounds, the medium firm Midnight model may offer the right amount of back support and responsiveness to align the spine. 

We found the Dusk, Twilight, and Dawn models offered a comfortable surface for average-weight back sleepers. Our testers gave the Plus option particularly high marks, as it offered extra comfort layers for added back support. Back sleepers over 230 pounds should find the Twilight, Plus, and Dawn models offer the most support.

Stomach Sleepers

Like back sleepers, stomach sleepers generally require a firmer surface that promotes spine alignment and prevents them from sinking too far into the mattress.

Both the Dusk and Midnight models have a medium firm feel, which allows for light contouring and helps keep sleepers under 130 pounds from sinking into the mattress. The Twilight also scored highly for average-weight sleepers during testing, though some testers preferred a softer feel. 

Stomach-sleeping testers weighing between 130 and 230 pounds noticed the Twilight, Plus, and Dawn offered a firm feel that kept them on top of the mattress, helping to keep the spine in alignment. 

Our testing team found the Dawn model offered the most support for stomach sleepers over 230 pounds, as the thick polyfoam comfort layer contoured to the body without providing too much give.

Combination Sleepers and Couples

Combination sleepers and couples need a mattress that performs well for multiple body weights and sleep positions. We found the medium firm Dusk and Midnight models provided the most support for most sleepers under 230 pounds. The firm feel of the Twilight and Plus models suited sleepers over 130 pounds. 

With multiple Helix models to choose from that support a variety of sleeper types, combination sleepers and couples should find a model that meets their needs.

Our testers found all Helix models provided a cool sleep surface. Memory foam traps body heat, but the Helix models combat this with a cover designed to keep sleepers cool and a responsive coil support core that promotes air circulation throughout the mattress. The Helix Dawn performed best in this category, as it is the firmest model and incorporates minimal memory foam in its construction. 

Motion Isolation

The Helix Sunset, Dusk, and Plus models rank the highest in this category. We found the Twilight’s responsiveness made it better suited to solo sleepers. 

Edge Support

Some Helix models feature a reinforced perimeter, which suits sleepers who prefer using the mattress’ entire surface or sleeping on the edge without sinking. Our testing team found the Twilight and Dawn models were both good options for sleepers who prefer strong edge support. Some sleepers may find that the Sunset and Moonlight versions allow too much sinkage and make it more challenging to get in and out of bed. 

Durability

Most hybrid mattresses have a lifespan of 7 to 10 years. Our testing revealed that all Helix mattress models had similar durability ratings as other hybrid mattresses, meaning they should last as long as the average hybrid mattress when used properly. The Plus slightly outranks the other models thanks to its firmer construction and denser memory foam layers, which tend to last longer than softer memory foam. 

Ease of Movement

In general, firmer mattresses offer better range of movement than softer ones. Mattresses that incorporate memory foam comfort layers, like the Sunset and Moonlight models, allow sleepers to sink into the mattress. This makes it more difficult to move across or get in and out of bed. A firmer surface offers a more responsive feel, allowing sleepers to freely move around. Our testing team found that the Twilight and Dawn models provided above-average ease of movement.

Mattresses conducive to sex feature strong edge support, ease of movement, and a responsive surface. While the memory foam layers in the Sunset and Moonlight models may inhibit movement, the Midnight and Dawn versions have a firmer, responsive surface that makes it easier for couples to move across.

Mattresses that incorporate memory foam often release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) when first unboxed. These compounds have a chemical-like smell but are not considered harmful. Placing your mattress in a room with good ventilation should help the odors dissipate within 24 hours. 

Helix mattresses have a hybrid construction that blends comfort and support. Helix Luxe Mattresses

The Luxe models include a breathable Tencel cover, quilted pillow-top, zoned lumbar support, and a reinforced perimeter. This adds two extra inches to the mattress’ profile. Luxe models are also covered by a 15-year limited warranty, while standard mattresses include a 10-year limited warranty.

When compared to similar brands, Helix mattresses carry a competitive price tag. The Luxe option carries a higher price tag and includes upgraded features like a higher profile, pillow-top, and zoned lumbar support. The Helix Plus model, which is designed for heavier sleepers, also carries a higher price-point.
