Menopause brings about a number of physiological and emotional changes that can disturb sleep. Vasomotor symptoms like hot flashes and night sweats are common during menopause and can make it challenging to get a good night’s rest. Depression, anxiety, and decreases in estrogen and melatonin may also contribute to sleep disruptions.

A high-quality mattress can alleviate some of the menopause symptoms that affect sleep. For example, a mattress with good temperature control can help with hot flashes and night sweats. Since musculoskeletal pain is more common during menopause, it’s also important to choose a mattress designed to provide good pressure relief and support.

We’ll discuss our top picks for the best mattress for menopause, taking into account these and other factors that can help you get a good night’s sleep during this phase of life.

Saatva Classic

The Sleep Doctor’s Review

The Saatva Classic blends moderate contouring with targeted back support. The plush, quilted Euro-top cushions pressure points, while the memory foam lumbar pad reinforces good spinal alignment. Additionally, the coil support core and breathable cotton cover minimize heat buildup, making this mattress a great fit for those who want to alleviate menopause symptoms.

Pros

  • Available in two heights and three firmness levels
  • Quilted Euro-top with lumbar support
  • Free White Glove delivery

Cons

  • Luxury price-point
  • Saatva doesn’t ship directly to Alaska or Hawaii
  • Co-sleepers may notice some motion transfer on firmer models

Why We Like It

The Saatva Classic’s breathable materials and responsive surface stayed remarkably cool during our tests, making it a good option for those who experience hot flashes. With a plush Euro-top and combination of lumbar pad and unique dual coil layers, the mattress also strikes a nice balance of pressure relief and support. Add to that the multiple height and firmness options, and the Saatva Classic could be a good fit for a wide range of sleepers.

How Does It Feel?

The Saatva Classic is an innerspring mattress that comes in two heights (11.5 inches and 14.5 inches) and three firmness levels (Plush Soft, Luxury Firm, and Firm). These models correspond to soft (3), medium firm (6), and firm (8) on our 10-point firmness scale. Each model uses a combination of sturdy coils and zoned memory foam to promote good sleep posture.

Each firmness option performs differently depending on your weight and sleep position. The Luxury Firm model received high marks from testers of all body types and sleep styles. Its medium firm (6) feel cushioned pressure points while reinforcing neutral spinal alignment. Our side, stomach, and back sleepers over 130 pounds also got balanced support on the Firm option. The Plush Soft model cradled the hips and shoulders for side sleepers under 230 pounds, but it compressed too much for most of our back and stomach sleepers.

Awara Natural Hybrid Mattress

Dr. Michael BreusReviewer Picture

The Sleep Doctor’s Review

The Awara Natural Hybrid Mattress uses sustainably produced materials to create an exceptionally responsive bed that’s available at a comparatively reasonable price. The Dunlop latex evenly conforms to the body, improving spinal alignment and providing a balance of pressure relief and support for those with menopause symptoms.

Pain Relief:

Pros

  • Breathable cotton and wool cover
  • Responsive Dunlop latex comfort layer
  • Above-average temperature control

Cons

  • Slightly lower profile than other luxury hybrids
  • May be too firm for side sleepers under 130 pounds
  • Sinkage might not be deep enough for those who prefer to sleep “in” the mattress rather than “on” it

Why We Like It

We found that the Awara Natural Hybrid Mattress provides notable pressure relief as well as good support. The responsive latex slightly contours the body, while the pocketed coil core minimizes deep sinkage. In addition, the breathable materials help prevent the uncomfortable heat retention common during menopause.

How Does It Feel?

The Awara Natural Hybrid Mattress combines natural Dunlop latex with a sturdy pocketed coil core for a responsive, supportive feel. The sustainably sourced cotton and wool cover helps regulate surface temperature, which can be particularly helpful for those with menopause symptoms.

The pocketed coil support core encouraged good spinal alignment for most of our testers, especially those weighing over 230 pounds. However, our side sleepers under 130 pounds felt they didn’t get enough pressure relief around the hips and shoulders. Our tests also showed that the mattress stays quite cool. The cotton and wool cover naturally wicks away heat and moisture, while the pocketed coils circulate air throughout the core. The mattress is also very easy to move on without transferring much motion, making it a good fit for co-sleepers.

Pros

  • Four firmness options
  • Reinforced perimeter provides extra edge support

Cons

  • Comfort and support depend on choosing the right firmness for your needs
  • Heavier construction means you may need help to move it
  • Polyfoam contours the body less than memory foam

Why We Like It

The WinkBed is a durable hybrid available in four firmness levels: Softer, Luxury Firm, Firmer, and Plus. The quilted Euro-top cushions pressure points, while the zoned pocketed coil core evenly distributes body weight, making this a comfortable option for many sleepers regardless of weight or sleep position.

How Does It Feel?

When experiencing menopause symptoms, finding a mattress that fits your specific needs is important. With its four distinct firmness options, the WinkBed can accommodate a variety of sleep positions and body weights. The quilted pillow-top cradles pressure points without increasing body heat, and the mattress’ robust edge support gives you room to get comfortable without experiencing sagging around the edges of the bed.

The WinkBed’s sturdy hybrid construction supports a variety of sleep styles. Our testers who sleep on their side reported that the Softer and Luxury Firm models provided a comfortable amount of sinkage. Back and stomach sleepers preferred the contouring of the Luxury Firm and Firmer styles, though stomach sleepers over 230 pounds found that the Firmer model had less give. We also noted that the reinforced edges of the mattress prevented significant sagging, and the Tencel cover was soft and cool.

Best Luxury Mattress

Avocado Organic Luxury Mattress – Plush

Dr. Michael BreusReviewer Picture

The Sleep Doctor’s Review

The Avocado Organic Luxury Mattress features organic, sustainably sourced materials that sleep cool. Its exceptionally thick comfort system cushions pressure points while preventing significant motion transfer, and the zoned pocketed coil core alleviates tension by spreading body weight evenly across the mattress.

Buy From Avocado
Ideal For:

Eco-Conscious Shoppers

Firmness:

Medium, Medium Firm Options

Cooling:

Great Airflow

Pain Relief:

Excellent

Pros

  • Adaptive microcoils boost pressure relief
  • Made with organic and sustainably sourced materials
  • Zoned pocketed coil core delivers targeted support

Cons

  • The 17-inch height requires sheets with deep pockets
  • Needs professional setup
  • May not provide enough support for sleepers over 230 pounds

Why We Like It

The 17-inch Avocado Organic Luxury Mattress has a plush comfort system that blends layers of natural wool, alpaca fiber, cotton, silk, mohair, microcoils, and Dunlop latex. These layers are reinforced by an 8-inch pocketed coil core to provide extra pushback to the lumbar region, giving this mattress a nice balance of pressure relief and support that could work well for those with menopause symptoms.

Because they conform so closely to the body, plush mattresses can trap a lot of heat. However, we found that the Avocado Organic Luxury Mattress regulates temperature well. Its heat- and moisture-wicking materials can be especially welcome during hot flashes. Our tests also showed that the mattress excels at pressure relief, thanks to its substantial comfort system and zoned pocketed coil core.

How Does It Feel?

This mattress’ thick comfort system allows you to sink in more deeply than the average hybrid. Our side sleepers under 230 pounds reported that this sinkage eased pressure points on the hips and shoulders. Our back sleepers under 130 pounds also enjoyed the deeper contouring. However, the plush surface was too soft for our stomach sleepers and for back sleepers over 130 pounds. The pocketed coil core provides good bounce, while the plush comfort layers reduce motion transfer. This means that co-sleepers shouldn’t notice as much when their partner moves in bed.

Best Mattress for Back Pain

Puffy Lux Hybrid

Dr. Michael BreusReviewer Picture

The Sleep Doctor’s Review

The Puffy Lux Hybrid is a great fit for sleepers in need of extra pressure relief, such as those with back pain related to menopause. Plush memory foam relieves tension, while two types of polyfoam promote neutral spinal alignment. The medium (5) firmness provides even contouring that works particularly well for side and back sleepers under 230 pounds.

Buy From Puffy
Ideal For:

Back Sleepers

Firmness:

Medium

Cooling:

Some Airflow

Pain Relief:

Excellent

Pros

  • Multiple layers of foam provide good pressure relief
  • Gel infusions help keep sleepers cool
  • Machine-washable, stain-resistant polyester cover

Cons

  • May not provide enough support for sleepers over 230 pounds
  • Probably too soft for stomach sleepers
  • Foam layers produce some off-gassing

Why We Like It

Pressure relief is important for sleepers with back pain, and we found that the adaptive foams in the Puffy Lux Hybrid provided just the right amount of cushioning for most of our testers. The upper memory foam layer hugs the body without inhibiting movement, and it retains less heat than traditional memory foam. The strong motion isolation will also make this mattress a good option for those who share a bed.

How Does It Feel?

Puffy’s Lux Hybrid is 12 inches thick with a medium (5) firmness level. Cooling Cloud memory foam, Plush Dual Cloud polyfoam, and Climate Comfort polyfoam form the comfort system. These conforming foam layers are designed to resist heat buildup and provide good pressure relief, which can be particularly helpful for those with menopause symptoms.

The mattress’ moderate firmness provided a good balance of pressure relief and support for our side and back sleepers under 230 pounds. The medium (5) feel was sturdy enough to reinforce the midsection for stomach sleepers under 130 pounds. However, our stomach sleepers over 130 pounds reported that the mattress was too soft to provide enough support. Conventional memory foam tends to trap heat, but we found that the cooling gel infusions in the Puffy Lux offset this tendency. The mattress also transferred very little motion and was quiet when our testers changed positions.

Best Cooling Mattress

Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe

Dr. Michael BreusReviewer Picture

The Sleep Doctor’s Review

The Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe is a great fit for hot sleepers who like balanced contouring. Its adaptive comfort system evenly conforms to the body without retaining too much heat, which can be a big advantage for sleepers who experience hot flashes. The pocketed coil core and high-density foam base also provide above-average durability.

Buy From Brooklyn Bedding

Hot Sleepers

Firmness:

Medium Soft, Medium Firm, Firm Options

Cooling:

Some Airflow

Pain Relief:

Excellent

Pros

  • Available in three firmness levels
  • GlacioTex Cooling Cover with phase change material helps keep sleepers cool
  • Responsive TitanFlex polyfoam provides good pressure relief for sleepers under 130 pounds

Cons

  • Not all firmness options are suited to every sleeper
  • May produce some off-gassing
  • Sleep trial requires a 30-day break-in period

Why We Like It

Brooklyn Bedding’s Aurora Luxe is a hybrid mattress that comes in three firmnesses and incorporates cooling technology like phase change material (PCM), gel infusions, and open-cell foams. The comfort system combines responsive polyfoam and pressure-relieving memory foam, while the zoned pocketed coil core reinforces good spinal alignment.

We were impressed with the Aurora Luxe’s blend of cooling technology, pressure relief, and support. The adaptive polyfoam provided good spinal alignment, while the softer memory foam relieved tension. The combination of a cooling cover and open-cell foams also helped to regulate temperature, and the three firmness options make this hybrid a versatile choice.

How Does It Feel?

The medium firm (6) model worked well for most of our testers regardless of weight and sleep position. Its moderate contouring eased tension while limiting deep sinkage. The balanced support and pressure relief of the medium soft (4) version appealed to our testers weighing less than 130 pounds. Our stomach and back sleepers over 130 pounds appreciated the firm (7) model’s minimal contouring, and its sturdier surface also promoted even spinal alignment for side sleepers over 230 pounds.

Our tests showed that the mattress’ various cooling features were quite effective regardless of the firmness level. The GlacioTex cooling cover helped regulate surface temperature, while the open-cell foams circulated air throughout the comfort system.
